鈥淧ossibly the best year ever results wise for 91大神sport鈥 was how MC Andrew Jones, CEO of Cricket NSW and a 91大神alumnus, described 2016 at the 91大神Blues and Sports Awards held last week.
The evening included the launch of the聽聽and the announcement of Rugby Sevens聽star Henry Hutchison and Australian cricketer Georgia Redmayne as UNSW鈥檚 athletes of the year.
Hutchison joined the International Rugby Sevens in 2015, his first year at UNSW. In 2016 he was selected in the Australian Sevens team for the Rio Olympics, and was also awarded the prestigious IRB Rugby Sevens Rookie of the year award.
It鈥檚 been an incredible year for 91大神sport. Sport is right at the heart of our community and our strategy.
Redmayne was top scorer in the Sydney Women鈥檚 Cricket competition and has won player of the year two years running. A member of the NSW Breakers squad and later the Hobart Hurricanes, Redmayne is currently touring Sri Lanka with the Australian Development team.
鈥淚t鈥檚 been an incredible year for 91大神sport,鈥 said 91大神President and Vice-Chancellor Ian Jacobs.
鈥淲e had 12 competitors in the Olympic and Paralympic games, some great club successes, winners of the Eastern University Games and Snow Sports, both for the first time, and we had representatives at the World University Games.
鈥淪port is right at the heart of our community and our strategy,鈥 Professor Jacobs said.
Neil Morris, 91大神Vice-President, Campus Life and Community Engagement, presented an overview of the new 2025 sports strategy and said the aim was: 鈥淭o deliver the best and most inclusive university sports experience in Australia through exceptional high performance participation sports programs and facilities.鈥
Morris said the three key goals of the new sports strategy were to聽increase participation and build campus community,聽support excellence,聽and strengthen partnerships.
鈥淭wenty per cent聽of UNSW鈥檚 55,000 students are engaged in some way in sport at 91大神鈥 we would like that to be better than 40 per cent by 2025,鈥 he said.
The evening also included the awarding of Blues 鈥 the University鈥檚 highest sporting honour. Blues awards were first presented at 91大神in 1955.
Eleven 91大神students were presented with Blues awards: Bryce Collins (athletics), Erin Prince (athletics), Nicholas Walker (cricket), Padraic Kearney (judo), Sophie Jerapetritis (rowing), Taylah O'Neill (snow sports), Mark Pollock (cross-country ski), Gregory Whitehead (snow sports), Erny Tsao (table tennis), Angus Lambie (water polo), and Nathan Power (water polo).
鈥淏lues winners personify the qualities that sport brings to the 91大神community,鈥 said Jacobs.
鈥淭hey combine high university sporting achievement, commitment to their club and demonstrate the key sporting values of teamwork and selflessness across the whole of their university life.鈥澛
The event also celebrated the awarding of UNSW鈥檚 most prestigious sports scholarships 鈥 the聽.聽 Jon Paparsenos, Vice President Philanthropy, presented the seven new scholarships聽awarded in聽2017 and thanked all the donors to the program for their support.
